For this edition of Ask The Artist, we turned to Jay Barnes, the growling force behind the North Carolina death metal juggernaut LUST OF DECAY — a name whispered with reverence (and disgust) across the underground since the late ’90s. With the band’s long-awaited new album finally on the way, we asked Jay one question to test his devotion to the dark arts of death metal:
“What five death metal bands would you induct into a Metal Hall of Fame if it were up to you?”
Here’s what he said:
5. Malevolent Creation — One of the first bands to introduce me to death metal.
4. Suffocation — My introduction to the more technical side of death metal.
3. Morbid Angel — Local heroes and a huge influence on me growing up.
2. Deicide — A huge inspiration for my vocal style, especially the overlapping high and low vocals.
1. Cannibal Corpse — A massive influence on my lyrical writing style.
Five foundational pillars, five brutal reasons why death metal still reigns supreme — and Jay’s own band, LUST OF DECAY, is a living continuation of that same blood-soaked legacy.
Twenty-Five Years Later: LUST OF DECAY Returns with “Entombed in Sewage”
It’s been a long time coming — nineteen years, to be exact. But the demigods of depravity have finally clawed their way back from the crypt.
On December 12th, LUST OF DECAY will unleash their long-awaited fourth full-length album, Entombed in Sewage, via Comatose Music.
Formed over twenty-five years ago, the band carved their name deep into the underground with a series of unrelentingly brutal releases — and now they return stronger, darker, and sicker than ever. The new record delivers eight hymns of pure, unfiltered brutality, steeped in filth, gore, and tragedy. Every ravenous riff, every overwhelming blastbeat, every growl-drenched verse stands as a reminder that this band never lost their hunger for the extreme.
The first single, “Nourishing the Swine,” is out now — a vicious preview of what’s to come, filled with gut-twisting riffs and suffocating heaviness.
