Supergroup FIRESPAWN Reignite 4 Years After L-G Petrov’s Passing: Death Metal Never Dies (It Just Mutates)

Swedish death metal supergroup Firespawn is back from the abyss, and no, it’s not just your Spotify algorithm glitching. After a long silence following the heartbreaking loss of iconic frontman L-G Petrov in 2021, the band has officially reignited the flames—this time with another legend stepping up to the mic: Jörgen Sandström (ex-Grave, Torture Division, Entombed).

Yes, that Jörgen. The one who growls like a cement mixer full of brimstone and makes corpse paint seem like a lifestyle choice. According to founding guitarist Victor Brandt (ex-Entombed, ex-Aeon), this reunion isn’t just a comeback—it’s a tribute.

“We’re back!” said Brandt, because apparently understatement is the Swedish way of announcing that the gates of hell have reopened. “We’re doing this with love and respect for LG, and his spirit is still very much present in everything we do. Having Jörgen joining us feels like the natural next step, he’s family. He brings both the fire and the spirit we need.”

Translation: the riffs are still furious, the blast beats are still unrelenting, and Jörgen is still Jörgen—aka the guy you’d cast if you needed a Viking to lead your undead horde.

Even Jörgen himself acknowledged the gravity of the task:

“I believe that LG would have wanted Firespawn to keep on going… I’m not here as a replacement but simply to honor the legacy of our brother – have fun, play death metal, drink beer and headbang!”

A fitting mantra, really. Somewhere, Petrov is probably nodding in approval, beer in hand.

A Band Forged in Fire (and Probably a Few Hangovers)

Firespawn originally formed in 2015 as a sort of death metal dream team: L-G Petrov on vocals, Victor Brandt and Fredrik Folkare (Unleashed, Necrophobic) on guitars, Alex Impaler (Necrophobic) on bass, and Matte Modin (Raised Fist, ex-Dark Funeral, ex-Defleshed) on drums. It was meant to be a darker, meaner outlet than their other gigs—and oh boy, did they deliver.

Their three-album rampage—Shadow Realms (2015), The Reprobate (2017), and Abominate (2019)—was pure, unfiltered Swedish death metal chaos. Think chainsaws, blast beats, and enough riffs to power a Viking warship.

But after Petrov’s tragic battle with bile duct cancer, the band stepped back. For a while, it seemed like Firespawn had burned out.

Now, they’re lighting that torch again—not to erase the past, but to keep it burning in tribute.

What’s Next?

The band hints at “a lot going on down the pipeline,” which probably means new music, live shows, and a chance for fans to raise a horn (or ten) in honor of both the future and the fallen.

To put it bluntly: death metal doesn’t die. It just recruits another legend, tightens its guitar strings, and gets back to business.

So dust off your patched-up vest and practice your windmill headbang—Firespawn has returned. And they’re not here to go quietly.
