The Black Rock Desert was lit with fire and celebration on August 30, 2025, as Burning Man’s towering effigy burned against the Nevada sky. But amid the spectacle, tragedy struck. Around 9:14 p.m., officers were called to 8:30 & I streets, where they found 37-year-old Russian artist Vadim Kruglov lying in a pool of blood. Authorities later ruled his death a homicide.
Kruglov, originally from Omsk, Russia, had made Tacoma, Washington, his home. More than just an attendee, he was a creative force at the festival—leading a camp, building projects, and bringing his Mirror Heart installation to Black Rock City. Known by friends for his kindness and dedication, his sudden and violent death has devastated his family and community.
What Happened
Witnesses reported hearing a heated argument shortly before Kruglov was discovered, but no one saw the fatal moment. He was last seen dancing around the Mayan Warrior, the pyramid at Playa Alchemist, and at his camp near 7:45 & F. Authorities have since confirmed he was slain with a bowing knife. Sheriff Jerry Allen announced that local and federal officials are working together on the case, and multiple festival-goers have already been interviewed.
A Father’s Plea
On September 4, Kruglov’s father, Igor Dmitrievich Kruglov, broke his silence in two emotional statements.
“Words can’t express my feelings. I’m proud of my son, now known worldwide. He felt injustice deeply and fought for fairness always. This world is often unfair, but as a peaceful man, I seek justice. I want those responsible to face consequences.”
He also defended his son’s reputation, rejecting any attempts to link Vadim’s death to drugs or false rumors.
Community Support
A GoFundMe campaign raised more than $24,000 to cover repatriation costs, allowing Vadim’s body to be returned to Omsk, near the Russia-Kazakhstan border. Friends and fellow artists have honored him online, with Sofiia Shcherbakova calling him a “true Burning Man hero” and urging the public not to spread unverified claims while investigators work.
