Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist of KISS and one of the most influential figures in hard rock guitar history, has died at the age of 74. The news of his passing comes just hours after reports surfaced that he had been placed on life support following a brain bleed caused by a recent fall in his home studio.
Frehley’s family released a statement confirming his death, saying:
“We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth. We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever!”
Just weeks before his death, Frehley had canceled the remainder of his 2025 tour dates, initially citing undisclosed medical issues. The cancellations came shortly after he withdrew from a scheduled performance at the Antelope Valley Fair in Lancaster, California, following what was originally described as a minor fall at home.
At the time, his team stated that the guitarist had made a brief trip to the hospital and had been instructed by doctors to avoid travel while he recovered. What was first believed to be a precautionary measure ultimately led to a tragic outcome that has now left the rock world in mourning.
Ace Frehley’s legacy spans more than five decades, from his groundbreaking work with KISS to a prolific solo career that continued to inspire generations of musicians. Plans were underway for him to release Origins Vol. 3, the next entry in his series of albums paying tribute to the songs and artists that shaped his musical journey.
More updates and tributes from the rock community are expected in the coming days.
