Canadian deathcore veterans Despised Icon just added some polished hardware to their legacy—because apparently, even the most bone-crushing breakdowns look good next to a shiny trophy.
On March 29, 2026, at the Juno Awards ceremony held at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton, the band took home the Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year award for their latest offering, Shadow Work. Yes, deathcore just walked into a black-tie event and left with the crown—no tux required.
The category was stacked with serious contenders, proving once again that Canada’s heavy scene is anything but polite:
- Heaven Let Them Die — Counterparts
- An Insatiable Violence — Cryptopsy
- Shadow Work — Despised Icon (Winner)
- Antibloom — Silverstein
- A Pathway to the Moon — Unreqvited
Before the win, Despised Icon kept it humble (well, as humble as a band with blast beats can be), saying:
“Shadow Work is nominated for Metal Album Of The Year at The Juno Awards, Canada’s highest music honours — our second nomination in this category. Shoutout to our brothers in Cryptopsy, also nominated.”
Turns out, second time’s the charm—and this time, they didn’t just show up, they steamrolled the competition. Somewhere between the gutturals and the groove, Shadow Work convinced the judges that extremity deserves a spotlight… or at least a very aggressive handshake.
Canada stays heavy.
