Because one band isn’t enough, Phil “Land Phil” Hall (Municipal Waste, Cannabis Corpse, Iron Reagan, professional riff hoarder) and Mathias “Vreth” Lillmåns (Finntroll, …And Oceans, probably still scaring children in the Finnish countryside) are back at it with their blackened death/thrash beast MORBIKON.
This isn’t some fresh experiment — MORBIKON already dropped their debut, Ov Mournful Twilight, in 2022 via Tankcrimes, earning praise for being both “trve as fvkk and fvn as fvkk” (Angry Metal Guy). Now, the band is set to double down on the darkness with sophomore record Lost Within The Astral Crypts, out November 21st via Tankcrimes.
Hall sums it up with appropriate frostbitten flair: “This album feels like some of my darkest material yet. I filled these songs to the brim with atmosphere and riffs. There are moments during the album that truly feel soaked in classic ‘90s underground blasphemy.”
This time around, MORBIKON bulked up the lineup with Pierce Williams (Aenigmatum, ex-Skeletal Remains) on drums, plus Adam Guilliams (Cannabis Corpse) and Blake Hibberd on guitar. In other words: yes, it’s still a side project, but now it has enough members to start a small black metal commune.
The opening track and first single, “Heavens That Burn And Eons Divided,” gives a solid taste of the astral madness ahead. Hall explains: “We picked this track to open the album because it perfectly depicts the insanity within. We took great pleasure in making the atmosphere and riffs as dark as possible. This song touches on a little of everything within the album and offers a perfect setup.” Translation: expect whiplash, frostbite, and maybe a brief out-of-body experience.
Having already toured with Exhumed and Skeletal Remains and played fests like Decibel and Milwaukee Metal Fest, MORBIKON have proven they’re not just a “weekend project.” Still, the main draw remains obvious: if you ever wondered what happens when the MUNICIPAL WASTE guy and the FINNTROLL guy write evil space-blackened riffs together, well, here’s round two.
