So here’s the deal: Rich Hall, the big kahuna of one-person booking outfit 1000 Knives and absolute godfather of NYC’s metal scene, sadly kicked the bucket this January. Dude basically welded the scene together with pure grit and probably a few too many energy drinks.
His wife Carrie Whitney-Hall dropped this emotional nuke online: “It breaks my heart to write this, but the man I chose 14 years ago has passed. I knew the second we met, that I was going to marry him. I knew we’d make a cute kid too. This is our last family photo from Monster trucks on Sunday. We went out for Mexican food and C’s birthday dinner. His last meal was a giant burrito. We kissed good night and he thanked me for taking care of him. I’m thankful our last moments were happy and content.
“You guys this is so hard, he loved and is loved by so many people. I want to see all of you and hug all of you. Just let me figure out the hard stuff and we’ll plan celebrations on both coasts! I always say this, but tell each other you love them and give big Rich Hall hugs to everyone, you never know how much time you have together!”
Now, because Rich apparently never did anything small, they’re throwing a two-night metal apocalypse in his honor June 13-14 across Brooklyn. Lineups are STACKED – we’re talking “sell-your-grandma’s-silver” level good:
6/13 Brooklyn, NY @ The Warsaw
- FROM AUTUMN TO ASHES (fun fact: their drummer once sang lead while drumming – like a metal version of patting your head while rubbing your stomach)
- ORANGE 9MM (named after a handgun and a condom size, because subtlety is for jazz bands)
- HARVEST
- KISS IT GOODBYE
- SKYCAMEFALLING
- DYSTARON
- + Special Guests (probably someone who’ll make you spill your $14 venue beer)
6/14 Brooklyn, NY @ Brooklyn Monarch
- CONVERGE (these mathcore legends could start a mosh pit in a library)
- CAVE IN (went from crushing skulls to writing space rock love songs – respect)
- DEADGUY
- DEFEATER
- TODAY IS THE DAY (Steve Austin’s crew – not the wrestler, the other noisy Steve Austin)
- SHUTDOWN
- ENSIGN
- NORA
- CIPHER
- LOCKED IN A VACANCY
- FASHION WEEK (because even metalheads need runway shows)
