STATIC ABYSS Drag Death Metal Into Psychedelic Swamps On “The Dying Hunt”

STATIC ABYSS have unveiled a new video for “The Dying Hunt,” the title track from their third studio album. The record arrives August 28 through Peaceville, carrying another shipment of death metal filth out of the abyss and directly into the nervous system.

The project once again brings together DEATHGRAVE guitarist and bassist Greg Wilkinson with vocalist Chris Reifert. Both musicians also serve in AUTOPSY, while Reifert’s résumé stretches back to his early work with death metal pioneers DEATH. This time, the duo recruited NECROT drummer Chad Gailey to help administer the punishment.

The Dying Hunt follows 2022 debut Labyrinth of Veins and 2023’s Aborted From Reality. Its title track offers another plunge into the band’s warped mixture of brutal death metal, doom and crust, with savage riffs colliding against spiraling melodies and psychedelic unease.

It is less a straightforward attack than a fever dream armed with blunt instruments.

Across the album, STATIC ABYSS move between violent passages and hypnotic, otherworldly detours while reflecting the decay of the modern world and the fraying minds trapped inside it. Cheerful material, then—but nobody came to this particular swamp looking for sunshine.

The Dying Hunt was recorded at Earhammer Studios in Oakland, California. Wilkinson handled the engineering, mixing and mastering, while Jon Santos created the cover artwork.
