At 99 years old, most people are expected to slow down. Pauline Kana decided to crowd surf instead.
The internet-famous “Gangster Granny” has officially earned a Guinness World Record after becoming the oldest person ever to crowd surf at a concert, proving that the urge to raise hell doesn’t come with an expiration date — even if maybe your knees would prefer otherwise.
Born in 1926, Kana became a viral sensation years ago thanks to videos with her grandson Ross Smith, whose clips have gathered millions of followers online. But while plenty of people spend their later years avoiding loud music and chaos, Kana apparently saw a packed concert crowd and thought: “Yeah, throw me into that.”
The historic moment happened during a show by country artist Brantley Gilbert at the Austin County Fairgrounds in Texas. After being introduced onstage, Kana was lifted above thousands of fans and carried across the crowd while chants of “Granny! Granny!” echoed through the venue. Somehow, it looked equal parts legendary and mildly terrifying.
“I did it! I’m the greatest of all time!” Kana shouted after receiving her Guinness World Records recognition.
And honestly, there’s something weirdly inspiring about it. Rock and metal culture has always celebrated the idea that music keeps you alive, no matter your age. Punk shows, metal festivals, classic rock reunions — they’re filled with people refusing to quietly age out of the things they love. Kana just took that philosophy to its absolute extreme.
Of course, there’s also a reason most 99-year-olds are not being launched over concert barricades. Crowd surfing can go wrong fast even for people half her age. Falls, injuries, packed crowds, and the general unpredictability of live shows are very real risks. The lesson here probably isn’t “everyone over 90 should immediately stage dive.” It’s more that life doesn’t automatically end when society expects you to stop having fun.
Maybe the real victory isn’t the world record itself. Maybe it’s refusing to become invisible just because you got older.
As Kana herself once explained in an earlier interview, she never expected this chapter of her life. Growing up without television or internet, she went from total anonymity to becoming a beloved online personality known around the world. And instead of resisting it, she embraced the chaos.
There’s a certain beauty in that. Enjoy the show. Make memories. Surprise people. Just maybe stretch first… and if you’re planning to crowd surf at 99, make sure somebody trustworthy is catching you on the other side.
