Polish progressive rock stalwarts RIVERSIDE are facing what may be the most serious collapse in their history, as back-to-back departures of key members have pushed the band into full uncertainty and raised a blunt question: is RIVERSIDE effectively over?
What began as a shocking exit by founding bassist and vocalist Mariusz Duda has now escalated into a near-total unraveling of the group’s core lineup, with longtime guitarist Maciej Meller also announcing his departure shortly after.
The First Break: Mariusz Duda Walks Away
The situation began when Mariusz Duda confirmed he was leaving RIVERSIDE after 25 years, citing deep internal tensions and a deteriorating creative environment. His statement made it clear this was not a casual exit, but the result of long-building frustration.
Duda emphasized that his primary issue was the inability to continue making music in what he described as a compromised emotional and interpersonal environment. He also expressed exhaustion with maintaining what he called a “smiling band image” that no longer reflected reality.
In one of the most striking parts of his statement, Duda directly tied his recent lyrical themes—particularly on The World Under Unsun—to the internal state of the band, framing songs like “The New End” as a farewell message.
He concluded with a decisive position: he does not see RIVERSIDE continuing without him, and instead will focus entirely on his solo project LUNATIC SOUL.
The Second Blow: Maciej Meller Follows
Just as the dust around Duda’s departure began to settle, guitarist Maciej Meller—who joined RIVERSIDE as a touring member in 2017—also announced his exit.
Meller’s statement painted a broader picture of systemic internal breakdown. Rather than framing the situation as a single conflict, he described tensions involving all members, which had escalated over time and ultimately reached a breaking point.
However, one detail stood out sharply: Meller explicitly stated he does not see RIVERSIDE existing without Duda, calling him a central figure whose absence fundamentally changes the band’s identity.
He also revealed that attempts at a unified band statement had collapsed behind the scenes due to lack of agreement, and that even plans for a hiatus and restructuring failed to produce consensus.
Despite the tone of finality, Meller ended his message on a reflective note, thanking fans for years of support and hinting at future musical projects outside RIVERSIDE.
A Band Without Its Core?
With both Duda and Meller now out, RIVERSIDE is reduced to drummer Piotr Kozieradzki and keyboardist Michał Łapaj, alongside an uncertain future.
What makes this collapse particularly notable is not just the number of departures, but the shared sentiment across statements: multiple members independently suggesting that RIVERSIDE cannot realistically continue without its founding creative core.
Even more telling is the tone of the internal communication leaks and statements, which suggest prolonged tension rather than a sudden rupture—months of disagreement, failed negotiations, and emotional fatigue.
The Bigger Picture: End of an Era?
RIVERSIDE has long been one of Poland’s most respected progressive rock exports, known for atmospheric concept albums and emotionally charged live performances. But what is emerging now is less a typical lineup change and more a structural dissolution.
When key members openly state the band cannot continue, and remaining members acknowledge unresolved conflict, the situation moves beyond “hiatus territory” into something much closer to an unofficial ending.
Still, no official statement has confirmed the band’s dissolution.
For now, RIVERSIDE exists in a strange limbo: technically still active, but functionally fractured at its core.
What Comes Next
Duda is already pivoting fully toward LUNATIC SOUL and other projects. Meller is also signaling new collaborations ahead. The remaining members have not outlined a clear continuation plan.
Whether RIVERSIDE attempts a reconstruction or quietly fades into legacy status remains unclear—but based on current statements, any continuation would likely bear little resemblance to the band fans have known for decades.
One thing, however, is already certain: RIVERSIDE as it once was is gone.
