Ira Black’s New Band APOCÆLYPSE Ask Who’s Really in Control on “INTELL-I-GENTS”

Most metal veterans eventually start a side project. Some record a blues album. Some buy motorcycles. Ira Black decided to build an entire futuristic metal band and put himself behind the microphone.

The longtime guitarist known for his work with VIO-LENCE, METAL CHURCH, LIZZY BORDEN, I AM MORBID, and WESTFIELD MASSACRE has unveiled APOCÆLYPSE, a new project that finds him stepping into the roles of vocalist, songwriter, and creative mastermind.

The band’s debut single, “INTELL-I-GENTS,” serves as an introduction to a sound built on crushing modern metal, industrial textures, electronic elements, and cinematic atmosphere. Lyrically, the track takes aim at artificial intelligence, digital surveillance, and humanity’s increasingly cozy relationship with technology. In other words, the kind of topic that becomes a little less science fiction every time another app asks for access to your entire life.

Driven by massive riffs and a mechanical pulse, “INTELL-I-GENTS” explores the uneasy balance between human instinct and machine logic. Rather than offering a distant dystopian warning, the song focuses on the present moment and the growing influence algorithms already have over everyday life.

The accompanying music video, directed by Vicente Cordero of Industrialism Films and co-directed by Black himself, expands on those themes through a futuristic visual narrative that blurs the line between humanity and technology.

APOCÆLYPSE features a formidable lineup beyond its founder. Joining Black is his son, guitarist Ira Black IV, whose classical training brings additional technical depth to the band’s sound. The rhythm section includes former FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH bassist Matt Snell and drummer Lonny Pasillas, known for his work with DEADSETT and KILL DEVIL HILL.

The project also assembled an experienced production team. Producer and mixer Kane Churko helped shape the debut single’s modern punch and clarity, while mastering engineer Maor Appelbaum provided the finishing touches.

“INTELL-I-GENTS” is only the first chapter. APOCÆLYPSE plans to release several additional singles throughout the summer ahead of its debut full-length album, a ten-track effort expected later this year. More music videos, live appearances, and touring plans are expected to follow.

For a debut statement, APOCÆLYPSE aren’t exactly easing into things. They’re diving headfirst into questions about technology, control, and the future—while making sure there’s enough heaviness to shake a few circuits loose along the way.
